6 dangers of covetousness
Dear Christian, God had a reason for giving us his tenth Commandment. “You shall not covet [that is, selfishly desire and attempt to acquire] your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” Exodus 20. Below I give 6 dangers of covetousness.
- Covetousness can cause greed.
Then He said to them, “Watch out and guard yourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of nor is it derived from his possessions.” Luke 12:15
2. Covetousness may cause envy.
A calm and peaceful and tranquil heart is life and health to the body,
But passion and envy are like rottenness to the bones. Proverbs 14:30
3. Covetousness may cause jealousy.
“Wrath is cruel and anger is an overwhelming flood,
But who is able to endure and stand before [the sin of] jealousy?” Proverbs 27:4
4. Covetousness may cause you to lust.
For all that is in the world—the lust and sensual craving of the flesh and the lust and longing of the eyes and the boastful pride of life [pretentious confidence in one’s resources or in the stability of earthly things]—these do not come from the Father, but are from the world. 1 John 2:16
5. Covetousness may cause you to steal.
The thief [who has become a believer] must no longer steal, but instead he must work hard [making an honest living], producing that which is good with his own hands, so that he will have something to share with those in need
6. Covetousness may lead you to Hell.
