Dear reader, sel-discipline is one of the weapons Christians have against the devil. Therefore, hell awaits any Christian who lacks self-control.
What is self-control in Christianity?
To begin with, we need to understand what self-control is. Self-control is the ability to regulate your emotions, impulses, and behaviors to align with holiness, often by resisting sin in favor of God’s righteousness.
Self-control involves three key areas: impulse control, which is pausing to think before acting; emotional control, managing feelings without being overwhelmed; and movement control, which prevents inappropriate physical actions. This complex skill is essential for success, satisfaction, and managing various aspects of life, especially resisting sin.
What God’s written word in the Bible says.
Second, let us listen to what our Heavenly Father, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit have to say about self-discipline.
Listen to them:
A person without self-control
is like a breached city, one with no walls.
Proverbs 25:28
The significance of self-control.
As indicated in the Bible verse above, in the ancient world, the primary defense of a city was its walls. Without good walls, the city was vulnerable to attack. In fact, it was virtually waiting to be conquered.
Therefore, a person lacking self–discipline is defenseless. That person is vulnerable to attacks from the enemy; especially relevant here the spiritual temptations of Satan.
Self-control is much like a wall against temptation. It does not make the temptation go away, itself. Yet it helps a person resist until the temptation passes or is chased off.
How to acquire self-control.
Finally, you cannot acquire self-discipline on your own. In fact, it usually comes with the power of the Holy Spirit. Actually, self-control is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, during your prayers always ask the Holy Spirit to be with you so that you always have self-control.
