Dear reader, many Christians don’t understand what “fearing God” means. To fear God actually means to hate sin.
First, the phrase “the fear of the Lord” is frequently misunderstood. In fact, to the modern mind, fear implies terror, dread, or the urge to flee from a tyrannical force. However, in a spiritual context, fearing God is not about cowering in fright. Rather, it is deeply intertwined with moral clarity. To truly fear God actually means to hate sin.
Sin fractures our relationship with the Creator.
Scripture explicitly establishes this connection in Proverbs 8:13, stating, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil.” When we understand God’s character—defined by absolute holiness, justice, and love—we begin to see sin through His eyes. Sin is not just a violation of arbitrary rules. It is a destructive force that fractures our relationship with our Heavenly Father and harms His creation. Therefore, a genuine reverence for God naturally produces a profound distaste for the things that oppose His nature.
View sin as a toxic element that should be avoided.
True fear of God is rooted in awe, respect, and a desire to please Him. Just as a child who deeply respects their parents fears disappointing them, a believer who reveres our Heavenly Father fears the relational distance that sin creates. This reverence shifts our perspective. We stop viewing sin as a forbidden pleasure we are missing out on. And we begin to see it as a toxic element to be avoided.
You hate what God hates.
Ultimately, hating sin is the practical evidence of a heart that reveres God. It moves faith from a passive belief to an active pursuit of righteousness. When we cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord, our desires are reoriented. We no longer tolerate compromise or justify wrongdoing. Instead, we turn away from evil and draw closer to the source of all goodness. This proves that the beginning of wisdom is a heart that loves what God loves and hates what He hates.
